Events: Conferences, Symposia & Workshops

Archimedes Research Unit contributes to scientific exchange through events it organises, co-organises or supports, and through the participation of its researchers in organising and scientific committees. The events below bring together researchers, students and practitioners across AI and its supporting disciplines.

General AI

  • Symposium — Greeks in AI 2026. The symposium brought together Greek AI researchers and practitioners from around the world. Archimedes contributed through General Co-Chair Maria Vakalopoulou, organising committee members Kostas Daniilidis, Efstratios Gavves, Maria Papadopouli and Sotiris Tsaftaris, and advisory board member Timos Sellis.
    • Archimedes Feast — An Evening with Archimedes (2026). Part of Greeks in AI 2026, the event took place at the Eugenides Foundation on 15 July 2026. It presented Archimedes’ vision and activities, researchers’ experiences and career development, connections with industry, and future directions. Christos Papadimitriou gave a keynote talk and then Archimedes students presented their research.
  • Workshop — 2025 Archimedes Computer Vision Day. Organised and hosted by Archimedes at its amphitheatre on 22 July 2025, the event brought together researchers working on visual understanding and generative AI. Following opening remarks by Kostas Daniilidis, talks by Dimitris Tzionas, Dimitris Samaras and Vicky Kalogeiton explored 3D human–object interactions, human gaze and efficient generative models.
  • Symposium — Greeks in AI 2025. Co-organised with Archimedes, the symposium connected the Greek AI community through research presentations, mentoring and discussions on collaboration between academia and industry. Archimedes Head Timos Sellis moderated the panel on the Greek AI ecosystem.
  • Workshop — Archimedes Collaborative Workshop (2025). Hosted by Archimedes at its amphitheatre on 4 June 2025, the workshop featured HSBC researchers Jeremy Kulcsar, Will Shoosmith and Giulio Giaconi. Talks covered distributed optimal transport, quantum-enhanced reinforcement learning, innovation in financial services and uncertainty modelling in Bayesian regression, encouraging exchange between academic and industrial research.
  • Conference — SETN 2024 — 13th Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Archimedes contributed to the conference through the organisation and support of its Responsible Artificial Intelligence workshop (ReAI), with Evaggelia Pitoura and Danae Pla Karidi among the workshop organisers. Archimedes researcher Panayiotis Tsaparas also served on the conference programme committee.
  • Summer programme — Archimedes 2023 Summer Program. During June and July 2023, Archimedes brought together more than 45 junior and senior researchers for research exchanges, presentations and seminars. The programme included four thematic workshops spanning life sciences, computer vision, natural language processing and responsible AI.

Natural language processing & dialect resources

  • Workshop — DialRes-LREC 2026 — Dialects in NLP: A Resource Perspective. Held on 16 May 2026 alongside LREC in Palma de Mallorca, this workshop focused on creating, documenting and using dialectal language resources. It was endorsed by Archimedes, with Antonios Anastasopoulos, Stella Markantonatou, Angela Ralli, Stavros Bompolas and Vivian Stamou listed as organisers with Archimedes affiliations.
  • Workshop — UniDive WG1 Workshop on Dialect Varieties (2025). Co-organised by Archimedes and Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, the workshop took place at LMU’s Center for Information and Language Processing on 11–14 August 2025. Entitled “Standardization and variation for dialect varieties with Universal Dependencies as an application framework”, it focused on dialect variation and annotation using Universal Dependencies.
  • Conference — ICDL 2025-Ιnternational Conference on the Dialect of Lesbos. Co-organized by Archimedes and held in Mytilene, Lesvos, on 4–6 July 2025, the conference focused on the study, documentation, and preservation of the island’s dialect. Archimedes researchers also contributed to the scientific programme, presenting work on creating language resources for the development of language models in Lesbian Greek.
  • Workshop series — Modern Greek in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Resources and Tools (2025). Organised by Archimedes, this experiential workshop series was scheduled at Democritus University of Thrace on 6 May, the University of the Aegean in Rhodes on 19 May, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on 22 May, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on 14 June 2025. Designed for students and teaching staff in the humanities and social sciences with little or no prior technical experience, the workshops combined introductions to AI and language models with practical applications in speech transcription, text analysis, lexicography and translation.
