Sofoklis Kakouros is a researcher at the University of Helsinki whose interests are rooted in speech and language, with a particular emphasis on prosody and its associated phenomena. Prosody concerns how something is said and adds meaning beyond the words themselves through elements such as intonation and timing.
His research explores various aspects of prosody, focusing on information-theoretic processes and how acoustic and linguistic variations are statistically organised into the prosody we perceive. He has been working on the Research Council of Finland project “Computational Modeling of Prosody in Speech”, which aims to understand the statistical organisation of speech acoustics and its connections to prosodic dimensions such as prominence and emotion. This work has applications in areas including the prosodic analysis of dialectal varieties and parliamentary speech.
