Title: A Database Researcher Perspective on Ethical AI for Education

Speaker: Sihem Amer-Yahia (CNRS, Univ. Grenoble Alpes)

Abstract: The last few years has seen a proliferation of digital work and education platforms from crowdsourcing and freelancing marketplaces to MOOC-type platforms. Educational technologies coupled with AI hold the promise of helping learners better upskill but like in any other societally critical AI-powered system, the question of ethics arises. I will describe my perspective on rethinking the design of AIED by combining the power of data management and machine learning to better implement education theories and provide safe data-informed personalized upskilling.

Short Bio: Sihem Amer-Yahia is a Silver Medal CNRS Research Director and Deputy Director of the Lab of Informatics of Grenoble. She works on exploratory data analysis and algorithmic upskilling. Sihem worked as Principal Scientist at QCRI, Senior Scientist at Yahoo! Research and Member of Technical Staff at at&t Labs. Sihem served as PC chair for SIGMOD 2023 and as the coordinator of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative for the database community. In 2024, Sihem received the 2024 IEEE TCDE Impact Award, the SIGMOD Contributions Award, and the VLDB Women in Database Award.

Mission

To build an AI Excellence Hub in Greece where the international research community can connect, groundbreaking ideas can thrive, and the next generation of scientists emerges, shaping a brighter future for Greece and the world

Welcome to ARCHIMEDES, a vibrant research hub connecting the global AI and Data Science research community fostering groundbreaking research in Greece and beyond. Its dedicated core team, comprising lead researchers, affiliated researchers, Post-Docs, PhDs and interns, is committed to advancing basic and applied research in Artificial Intelligence and its supporting disciplines, including Algorithms, Statistics, Learning Theory, and Game Theory organized around 8 core research areas. By collaborating with Greek and Foreign Universities and Research Institutes, ARCHIMEDES disseminates its research findings fostering knowledge exchange and providing enriching opportunities for students. Leveraging AI to address real-world challenges, ARCHIMEDES promotes innovation within the Greek ecosystem and extends its societal impact. Established in January 2022, as a research unit of the Athena Research Center with support from the Committee Greece 2021, ARCHIMEDES is funded for its first four years by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
