Ion (Ioannis) Androutsopoulos

Ion Androutsopoulos is Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Informatics, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and co-director of AUEB's Natural Language Processing (NLP) Group. He holds a Diploma (MEng) in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (1991), an MSc in Information Technology/Knowledge Based Systems from the University of Edinburgh (1992), and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh (1996). Before joining AUEB in 2002, he worked as a research scientist in what is now the Centre for Language Technology of Macquarie University in Sydney (1996-97), and the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR "Demokritos" (1998-2002). His current research interests include: machine learning in NLP, especially deep learning and large language models; question answering, retrieval augmented generation, multi-step reasoning for document collections; dialog systems, especially porting them to new languages and knowledge domains; sentiment analysis and emotion recognition from text and speech; improving online discussions, including detecting and handling toxic posts and disinformation, and using large language models as facilitators; image to text generation, mostly generating diagnostic tags and diagnostic reports from medical images; NLP for biomedical, legal, financial data and NLP in the digital humanities; NLP tools for Greek.
