Christos Tsapelas
PhD student (NKUA) & Academic fellow
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Christos is working as a research associate at Athena Reasearch and Innovation Center, under the supervision of Dr. Georgia Koutrika. His research interests lie on the intersection of Machine Learning with Database Systems, especially on applications of Deep Learning for query optimization and applications of NLP on various assets of DBMS. Currently, he is working for FAIR Core 4 EOSC project, responsible for NL search services over OpenAIRE Research Graph. Christos is also working as head teaching assistant for the Database Systems class, course of Data Science and Information Technologies program.

He received his MSc degree from Data Science & Information Technologies program, with a specialisation on Big Data & Artificial Intelligence, at the University of Athens, defending his thesis with title: "QPSeeker: An Efficient Neural Planner Combining Both Data and Queries through Variational Inference". Prior to that, he completed his BSc degree in Computer Science from the same faculty, and his BSc thesis was titled Pathlet Learning for Compressing and Planning Trajectories, under the supervision of Dr. Dimitris Gunopoulos.

PhD research topic is "Towards a Neural Database Execution Engine"
Abstract: We propose a new analytical query engine that extends relational algebra with AI-powered operators, enabling seamless querying across structured and unstructured data such as text, images, audio, and tables. We introduce a formal algebraic framework and a modality-agnostic execution model, allowing declarative, cross-modal analytics while integrating both foundation models (e.g., LLMs) and specialized ML/DL models for efficiency and flexibility, paving the way to advanced semantic analytics
