Title: Open problems and questions for near-term quantum algorithms

Abstract: After a brief introduction quantum computing and near-term quantum algorithms we aim to expose the audience with a variety of open problems which we would like to partially address during our research efforts within the Archimedes initiative. Given that these so-called variational quantum algorithms are not only popular among the academic community but also have sparked an industry of quantum startups, we aim to expose and discuss certain complexity theoretic, geometric and implementation issues and questions related to them with the purpose to attract the interest of the audience as well as the relevant experienced researchers who might have interest in tackling some of those problems with us.

George Korpas is a Senior Research Scientist at HSBC Labs and Research Fellow at the Optimization Group of the Department of Computer Science at the at the Czech Technical University in Prague mainly working in the interplay between quantum computation, optimization and artificial intelligence. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin where he worked on topological quantum field theories, modular forms and topological invariants of 4-manifolds. Afterwards, he had short posts at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, the National University of Singapore and at the Czech Technical University in Prague. His research interests include quantum computation including quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning, mathematical optimization and semi-definite programming, as well as mathematical aspects of machine learning and deep learning.
